CONEY ISLAND UNIVERSITY,
ENTOMOLOGY DEPARTMENT
Entomology is a basic and applied science of insects and their relatives such as ticks and mites. Insects are the most numerous and diverse forms of life on earth. They are essential constituents of virtually every terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem. Ultimately, entomology is the science of how we could co-exist with the "true owners of this planet" and sustainably obtaining benefits from them. The Coney Island University Entomology Department excels in research, extension and teaching to address these issues that confront the people of New York, our nation and the world. CIU’s entomologists also look for systemic solutions across disciplines to address these critical issues.

Extremely Rare and Newly Discovered Species
As seen in numerous news, the CIU Entomology Department has been famed for its annual "Bug Expeditions" for their bringing back Extremely Rare (ER rated) and Newly Discovered (ND rated) species of arthropods, which were never known to the world before. These are extremely valuable specimens for studying their genes, ecological impacts, and Micro & Macro evolutions. The Entomology Department's recent expeditions to the Bikini Atoll resulted discoveries of over a dozen of new mutant radioactive giant beetles; this founding urged the international scientific community to reinvestigate the ecological impact of the contaminated area by the 23 nuclear weapons' testing during 1946 and 1958 by the United States. Our expedition's re-discovery of the St. Helena Giant Earwigs (believed to be completely extinct decades ago) also produced international scientific community's collaborated efforts for delaying the building of the international airport in their habitat in St. Helena. Consult with the following links for more detailed information for these monstrous creatures. MOWW1 MOWW2 MOWW3 CONNECTEDBYPETS

Educational Outreach Programs
The Coney Island University Entomology Department has been collaborating with numerous educational and cultural institutions internationally for promoting the sustainable pet insect culture. Some of the specimens and rogue taxidermy artworks of the Entomology Department were displayed at prestigious institutions such as the American Museum of Natural History (Manhattan), Salt Marsh Nature Center (Brooklyn), Brooklyn Public Library - Coney Island Branch (Brooklyn), Museum of World Wonders (Brooklyn) etc. in New York.

Hissing Cockroach Center
The Hissing Cockroach Center of the Coney Island University, Entomology Department was originally established for breeding the Madagascar Giant Hissing Cockroaches (Gromphadorhina portentosa) to be fed by large reptiles publically displayed at the New York Zoo and dozens of sideshow companies at Amusement Park District in Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY during its Golden Era. In 2002, Dr. Takeshi Yamada was appointed for the Executive Director of the Hissing Cockroach Center, and he aggressively promoted its Educational Outreach Programs and Public Relation Programs. Today, the center also collaborate with numerous educational and cultural institutions as well as commercial companies internationally for promoting pet insect culture, modeled after that of the Tokyo University Entomology Department in Tokyo, Japan.
Articles of the Breeding of the Madagascar Giant Hissing Cockroach
Featured below are selected articles written by Dr. Takeshi Yamada. These were originally posted in numbers of pet insect blogs and websites in the United States and England. Dr. Yamada wrote and published over 100 short and long articles about pet insect culture, advanced captive breeding techniques of the hissing cockroaches, and his original invention called "Gourmet Dish for Hissers", which became a standard for science projects at schools around the world.

The Coney Island University Entomology Department has been engaging the New York City's effort to control the outbreaks of the Poisonous Cockroach species as shown below. The Coney Island University Entomology Department pioneered "Just Say No" campaign for New Yorkers stopping these poisonous cockroaches (in the city with large population of the fanatic animal rights movements, who even love these pests). Our department also pioneered "Just Say No" campaign for New Yorkers stopping "Roach Licking" and "Roach Sucking" (aka. "Ootheca Licking", "Roach Doping", "Strohbeeng").
Outbreaks of the Poisonous New York City Giant Leftwing Cockroaches in NYC
Cockroaches are blamed for the recent asthma outbreaks in New York City, according to the New York Times (May 17, 2011. LINK) Nevertheless, asthma may not the only illness caused by cockroaches in NYC. The dust of fecal pellets of the New York City Leftwing Cockroaches may also producing thousands of people with neurochemical diseases and mental disorders. One of the examples of this is New Yorkers' highest abortion rate in this nation. Here is the info.
Yesterday (January 6, 2011), a group of clergy members gathered to denounce the 40% abortion rate in New York City. The Health Department had previously revealed that of 87,273 pregnancies were "induced terminations," compared to nearly 127,000 live births (there were also over 11,000 miscarriages), which means NYC's abortion rate is about double the national rate. Archbishop Timothy Dolan said, "I’m frankly embarrassed to be a member of a community where 41 percent of pregnancies are terminated... New York does not deserve the gravestone 'Abortion capital of the world.' Our boast is the Statue of Liberty, not the Grim Reaper." (http://gothamist.com/2011/01/07/clergy_slam_nycs_40_abortion_rate.php)
In 2009, New York City became the nation's number one "City of Death": 41% of all New York City pregnancies end in abortion. Needless to say this is far more than 3,000 New Yorkers killed by terrorists only once on September 11, 2001. Mother Teresa said; “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you live as you wish. Many people are concerned with children of India, with the children of Africa where quite a few die of hunger, and so on. Many people are also concerned about the violence in this great country of the United States. These concerns are very good. But often these same people are not concerned with the millions being killed by the deliberate decision of their own mothers. And this (abortion) is the greatest destroyer of peace today - abortion which brings people to such blindness”. Click links below for details.
