THREE-EYED GODDESS OF ART & ALCHEMY (CERAMIC PLATE) (1983)
A series of oil paintings rendered on the ceramic dinner plates entitled "Three-eyed Goddess of Alchemy" was created by Yamada in Osaka, Japan, just before he moved to the United States in 1983. For Yamada, these are religious objects of spiritual and physical powers to protect his family and his nation, while is is away from there. (Yamada left Japan to the USA in 1983.) The images of these European-looking ladies are based on his memory of the oil paintings, that he saw at the major Western art exhibitions in Osaka, Japan. Yamada purchased the white dining dishes at the local store for these.
